Randpark Ridge community gets to know each other

RANDPARK RIDGE – A picnic was planned and hosted by community members in a bid to see their neighbourhood flourish.

With the aim of building a thriving community, a picnic was held at Hymany Park in Randpark Ridge so the community can get to know each other.

Hosted by a group called Randpark Ridge People and the Community, the day had the makings fit for any thriving community to revel in.

Not only were there sports and games for the children, but there were raffles and laughs for the adults too.

One of the group members, Tanja Schmitz explained the group was not affiliated with any community forum.

“We are just residents trying to make a difference in their community with the aim to hold our service providers accountable,” she said.

Fellow member, Candice Whitehead added to these sentiments and said one of the issues they want attended to is the rejuvenation of their parks.

They plan to send an appeal to City Parks for a fully funded redeveloped park.

“It would have park equipment and a gym as we have a beautiful green belt in the area.”

She added that they are also working on enclosing the area as a way to take back their neighbourhood from the crime.

“There has been a slow degradation of services in the area and we want a change,” said Schmitz. Adding that they want the community to integrate with one another as a way to uplift and develop their neighbourhood.

“We want to hold our service providers accountable and we want the support of the community so that we can come together.”

Another member, Juan Koch said they have had several successes thus far like patrols, tree plantings and residents painting their roads. “We seem to be gaining traction.”

He added that they want to spread their net as far as possible.

“We all have a role to play with this new approach to have proactive measures to combat crime and other issues faced by the community,” concluded Koch.
