Home ground maths advantage for Greenside High School

GREENSIDE – Greenside High School placed first in Gauteng the annual World Mathematics Day competition on 6 March.

Greenside High School placed first in Gauteng after hosting the annual World Mathematics Day competition on 6 March.

Various other schools from the Johannesburg north district participated.

World Mathematics Day is a day where schools from countries around the world celebrate the wonder of mathematics and share their love for all things maths.

Teacher William Wareham said, “Our teams looked forward to the competition and the strange, interesting and sometimes frustrating questions in each of the competition’s increasingly difficult rounds.

“Some who had participated in the competition before were excited to tackle it again with the added benefit of experience. Others were filled with nervous anticipation at the prospect of their very first World Maths Day competition.”

At the end of it all, schoolchildren, teachers and parents left happy, having the opportunity to solve fascinating maths problems alongside other maths fanatics.

Greenside High School’s principal, Nicola Whyte said, “The experience had been as enjoyable as it was educational. As an added bonus, two of Greenside High School’s teams made it into the top five, with one of our teams bringing the first place trophy home.”
