Origins of ‘strange smell’ in Linden found

LINDEN – Linden police's Captain Alex Vermaak confirmed that the chemicals were confiscated by them and are being tested.

After months of enduring a suspicious, often noxious smell, in Linden and parts of Blairgowrie, police and the City of Johannesburg have finally located the culprit.

A lubricant was being brewed in Central Road, and according to Ward 99 councillor, Nicole van Dyk, it was polluting the air. The man brewing the lubricant was found on 20 March.

“Law enforcement officers and [the City’s] environmental health [department] found the suspect to be brewing a lubricant,” van Dyk said.

All the chemicals that were seized have been destroyed. “Currently, there is still an inquiry being rolled out.”

Captain Alex Vermaak says an enquiry is open after a smelly liquid was confiscated.

Linden Police Station’s Captain Alex Vermaak confirmed that the chemicals were confiscated by them and samples were being tested.

“We are determining if the chemicals are illegal,” he said.

Vermaak said various police units, such as the K9 and bomb disposal units examined the chemicals but found nothing untoward.

Van Dyk said she would keep the community updated on any developments.
