Puppies seek loving home after being abandoned in Blairgowrie

BLAIRGOWRIE – Puppies saved after being abandoned in a vacant parking lot.

Two six-week-old pitbull border collie mixes who were rescued after being abandoned in Blairgowrie are now being nursed back to health.

Katherine Matthews of Pet Empowerment in Townships (Pets), said she received a call from a neighbour about the two puppies that had been dumped on the side of the road.

“I went to investigate and apparently a man in a black SUV drove to the intersection of Conrad Drive and Susman Road at about 9.30am last Thursday [22 March], got out of his car and put a box on the side of the road,” she said.

On the day the puppies were dumped it was also pouring with rain.

According to Matthews, the puppies were left in a vacant parking lot and the man who had witnessed the motorist taking the box out of his car went to check what had been left behind and found the two puppies.

Matthews said according to another witness, the man who dumped the puppies had been seen days prior at a local wholesale shop picking up an empty box.

“The dogs were taken to Radio Animal Clinic to be assessed,” added Matthews.

They were found not only to be malnourished but they also had ringworm and weighed between 1,37kg and 1,42kg, with bite wounds on their bodies.

“They are now being fostered by a Pets volunteer. The response to fostering and the adoption of the puppies has been phenomenal, all adoption applications will be screened by the Pets Animal Welfare organisation.”

The puppies will only be ready for rehoming in about two weeks.

Matthews said it was common for pets to be abandoned nearing the holiday season.

Not only are they dumped on roads but at the SPCA and animal shelters too with people claiming they had picked them up.

“Some are even taken to kennels and never get picked up.”
