Nine suspects were on the run after allegedly robbing Windsor East’s Kwikspar and shooting a teenager before hijacking the family’s car.

The robbers fled towards Ruiterhof, ending up in a gunfight with law enforcement in Nicolyn Street. Mpungose’s was shot twice, but returned fire and hit one of the suspects.

After residents learned of the incident, Mpungose was showered with gifts of well wishes and thank you notes, stacked around his bed at Life Flora Hospital, all in appreciation of his bravery and hopes of recovery.

Greg Pearce, the owner of Community Support Services, the company Mpungose works for, said he is expected to return to work in a couple of days, with his medical bills covered by the company.

As for going back to work, Mpungose is not afraid. He said he was prepared for anything that may happen.
