Bylaw breakers beware

JOBURG – There is nowhere to run or hide for Johannesburg bylaw breakers under operation #BuyaMthetho.

Gone are the days of dumping, breaking bylaws and getting away with it under the new bylaw enforcement operation, #BuyaMthetho.

The City of Johannesburg together with the Metro police will conduct all new multi-departmental operations working on a raid-like structure aimed at cracking down on bylaw infringers.

#BuyaMthetho will be conducted on a daily basis and will go ward by ward in the city.

Departments included in the operations will be Disaster Management, Environmental Health, Social Development, Infrastructure Services, Development Planning and the City’s legal department.

“The City, working with all state enforcement agencies will not leave any stone unturned when dealing with criminal activities within our area of jurisdiction,” said City of Joburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba.

He added that it was essential that the rule of law was brought back to the city which goes for landlords failing to pay their municipal bills all the way through to those running illegal liquor establishments.

Mashaba called on residents to support the initiative by reporting crime and trespassers of the law to local authorities.

The first #BuyaMthetho operation was conducted on 5 January where more than 15 buildings were targeted in Roodepoort, Parkview and the inner city.

Metro police have also been given the power to impound any vehicle that gets used for illegally dumping any refuse or materials.

In addition, Metro police officers may issue fines of up to R1 500 to any person found dumping illegally, after which their vehicles will only be released from the pound after a R2 850 fine is paid.
