Getting down and dirty

JOBURG – A Re Sebetseng, meaning 'let's work', is a campaign that was launched by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba in Yeoville on 14 August

The City of Johannesburg’s monthly clean-up campaign has gone from strength to strength since its inception last year, drawing bigger and bigger volunteers every month.

A Re Sebetseng, meaning ‘let’s work’, is a campaign that was launched by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba in Yeoville on 14 August.

Residents across Joburg can get their hands dirty the last Saturday of every month within their respective areas and the next clean-up is set for 24 February.

MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba said the campaign sought to promote a culture of cleanliness.

“A Re Sebetseng is about reawakening the spirit of the community and taking responsibility for the cleanliness of their areas,” Sifumba said.

“It is not an effort by the government to abdicate its responsibility for allocating resources to keep the city clean.”

Various businesses have also joined hands with the City or with Pikitup, pledging that they would keep the area around them clean and vowed their support of this project.

Mashaba said even though the campaign was facilitated by Pikitup, it was the responsibility of all councillors, City departments, and regional offices to drive the programme.

Plastic bags and gloves are distributed at walk-in centres, clinics, libraries, and participating businesses, he added. Filled bags are then collected on the same day by Pikitup.

“As A Re Sebetseng gains momentum and the City enters into pledge signing and memorandums of understanding, we are reaching more and more communities and realising the vision of the campaign,” said Mashaba.
