A Debs and Squires ball

BUSH HILL ESTATE – Newton House College's schoolchildren have already started preparing early for their year-end dance.

Newton House College’s first ever Debs and Squires ball is all set to take place at the end of September but the schoolchildren have already started preparing early.

“We decided to launch the Debs and Squires ball as our school is really growing,” said teacher and event organiser Connie Foster.

“Our little Grade 8s are now maturing into young adults, so we thought it would be good to really make them feel special.”

To add extra flavour to the preparations for the event, the school thought they would do things a little bit differently and encourage entrepreneurial thinking.

“In order to be eligible to attend the ball, students have to raise a minimum amount for a charity of their choosing,” said deputy headmaster Shaun Berman.

Foster added, “Our students raise this money in any entrepreneurial way possible, from a bake sale to washing cars… It is a good way to learn business skills and give back to the community at the same time.”

Berman concluded that the ball was a very formal event with girls in white dresses and boys in black suits, and it was really something that all the schoolchildren looked forward to.
