City must help now

No contingency plans for vagrants in Johannesburg

Indigents are left to wander around and fend for themselves.

They also have to find shelter and this causes headaches for residents. One of the affected areas is the bridge on Conrad Drive. Blairgowrie Community Association chairperson Jed Kemery said, “The City has no plans to help out homeless people and now they are sleeping under the bridge. Rubbish is left behind by these indigents and the area is starting to look like a rubbish dump,” said Kemery.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter added, “Safety levels are also of a concern as some of them can become violent when you approach them. The only solution is for the municipality to arrange accommodation for the homeless. But a lot will have to happen before we can reach this solution.”

Sector 4 Commander Warrant Officer James Swann said, “We cannot arrest people because they are homeless. The only thing that Randburg Police can do is to send them to our Trauma Centre and ask our dedicated staff to help the homeless with any medical problems they might have.”
