Police concerned about military grade weapons used in Windsor robbery

LINDEN – Linden police are investigating the robbery and shootout that happened in Randburg on 19 January.

The ‘war zone’ that erupted in Windsor East on 19 January left a security guard and a teenager shot, three arrested, one of whom was shot as well, and many others traumatised.

Police are investigating this case with various accounts given to them by victims. Facebook was filled with comments about gunshots and it sounding like warfare.

Linden police spokesperson Captain Walter Spencer said guns were recovered, one of which was of military grade.

One of the guns that were recovered was an AK47 at the Nicolyn Street family home, where the suspects were found. The family was in the house at the time of the shootout.

Handguns are mostly used by criminals, Spencer said. But getting a hold of bigger or less commonly found guns is harder and likely on the black market. Most armed robberies, he said, still involve handguns.

“Handguns are stolen out of safes or by robbing people. We find that everyday people who own firearms are very negligent.”

Firearms are a great concern, as are people who are negligent with their legally obtained guns.

Spencer said chances are good that more arrests will be made in this case.

Nicolyn Avenue was the scene of the shootout on 19 January.

Greg Pearce from Community Support Services said the suspects were definitely organised criminals and also shared his concern about the guns they had used.

He too is confident that more arrests will be made soon.
