Beanies for Beings make coverings for cancer

RANDBURG – A group of women from the organisation Beanies for Beings have knitted over 50 blankets for the PinkDrive cancer initiative.

A group of women from the organisation Beanies for Beings have knitted over 50 blankets for the PinkDrive cancer initiative.

Megan Botha of Beanies for Beings put out a call to her knitting group at the beginning of October, challenging them to make pink and white-squared blankets for the initiative.

Botha said, “Initially, the plan was for our In Stitches ladies to knit as many pink and white squares as they could, but a lot of them went the extra mile to make full blankets. Any extra squares were sown up to make pink beanies and scarves.

“I cannot even begin to explain the amazing length they have gone to for this cause.”

The largest blanket out of the lot was knitted to signify all aspects of the plight of breast cancer, with signs, symbols and colours.

The PinkDrive plans to hand the packaged blankets individually to women in hospitals who are undergoing cancer treatment.

Nelius du Preez, events manager for the PinkDrive said, “The blankets will not simply be dropped off at hospital wards in bulk, they will be handed individually to patients by volunteers.”

Beanies for Beings aims to conduct a similar challenge next November in the form of blue and white blankets to raise awareness for prostate cancer in men.

“The PinkDrive is a foundation to raise awareness and come to the aid of women who are suffering with breast and cervical cancer. “We also have another initiative that focuses on prostate and testicular cancer in men called More Balls Than Most.”
