Fingers turn green in Randburg

RANDBURG – The Randburg Horticultural Society shares how green fingers are for everyone and not just a few.

Although you might think you need green fingers to have a beautiful garden, the Randburg Horticultural Society thinks you just need to learn new concepts.

Committee member, Elvira Holz said the society, which has been in existence for the past 42 years, holds monthly meetings at different gardens.

“We do fundraising and we also have open gardens where we raise funds for various charities,” she said.

At these monthly meetings, held on the second Wednesday of the month at 10am, the society invites a speaker to host a talk on various topics of interest.

“The speaker might even talk about how to attract bees to your garden,” said Holz.

Holz said what fascinates her most about the group is that she gets to surround herself with like-minded people who, like her, learn something new at each meeting. The society has about 160 garden enthusiasts but there is still hope for the group to grow.

“We always want more members; I know that many young people who do not have a large garden space but beautiful gardens are not dependent on large spaces,” said Holz, adding that the lack of space should never deter anyone from having a great garden.

The venue for the meetings held is not always the same. Holz explained that the society travels to various gardens around Randburg and maybe even further.

“One of our furthest gardens we went to was in Kayalami, but we mostly have our meetings within the area,” she said.

The garden lover said one does not necessarily need green fingers to have a garden to envy. “It’s all about learning and the various talks held make it easy for one to grasp topics,” said Holz.

She said that although gardens are hard work and seasons come with their own challenges, the rewards are always great.
