Getting involved with the City’s monthly clean-up

JOBURG – A Re Sebetseng takes over Joburg on 30 September.

A Re Sebetseng, the City of Johannesburg’s citywide monthly clean-up campaign, got off to a good start.

On 30 September, hundreds of Joburgers turned up in their respective areas to clean up and give their public spaces some tender loving care.

Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba also jumped in and got his hands dirty. From Alexandra to Linden, the inner city and Rosettenville, people were cleaning up.

“I was heartened to see so many of our residents coming out in their numbers to help transform Johannesburg into a clean city we can all be proud of,” Mashaba said.

This was the first of many clean-ups which the City plans to host on the last Saturday of every month.

Mashaba said he was aware of certain ward councillors not willing to participate, but that some communities carried on without them.

“The City of Johannesburg belongs to all those who live in it and I cannot overstate the importance of each and every one of us playing our part in turning Johannesburg into a true city of golden opportunities.”

MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba agreed that the campaign seeks to promote a culture of cleanliness.

“A Re Sebetseng is about reawakening the spirit of the community and taking responsibility for the cleanliness of their areas. It is not an effort by the government to abdicate its responsibility for allocating resources to keep the city clean,” Sifumba said.
