After a warning was issued for residents to be on high alert by the South African Weather Service, storms hit parts of the north and north western suburbs of Johannesburg.
Reports streamed in about damages and floods in Westdene, Blackheath and areas located off Beyers Naudé Drive.
The temperamental weather started at about 4pm, leaving the skies dark, trees blown over by gusty winds, heavy rains and hail.
Rains were followed by sunshine only for the sky to be blacked out again and hail, wind and more rain to return.
According to the Westdene-Sophiatown Residents’ Association’s safety portfolio, in Sophiatown and Westdene, sections of several roads including Lewes, Perth and Toby roads as well as Victoria Street were flooded.
In Westdene, stones from Johannesburg Roads Agency’s sidewalk construction building materials and other debris found their way into the streets.
