City Power’s managing director position filled by long-standing employee

JOBURG – Lerato Setshedi has now stepped in as the new managing director.

The City of Johannesburg’s power utility, City Power, has finally appointed a new managing director after it dismissed former managing director Sicelo Xulu on grounds of misconduct.

Months after announcing an investigation into tenders within City Power, the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba said the findings made were damning.

Xulu took voluntary leave shortly after the investigations started as he said it would help to facilitate the investigation and he believed that it would clear his name again. However, he was dismissed and no disciplinary proceedings were instituted against him. Xulu maintained that he was not involved in any corruption.

Lerato Setshedi has stepped into the managing position.

City Power’s chairperson, Lael Bethlehem said Setshedi, a masters and BSc graduate, joined the entity in 2002 as a maintenance manager and rose through the ranks to hold the positions of field services manager; general manager of support services; general manager of technology; director of metering services and now managing director.

“The board is cognizant of the many challenges facing City Power and it is looking forward to building a culture of efficiency, service and good governance under Mr. Setshedi’s leadership,” Bethlehem said.

“The institution has weathered significant challenges in the past, which includes challenges in leadership, and we wish the new managing director well in his role and have full confidence that he will lead the entity to new heights.”
