400 knitted squares to keep children warm

British International Preparatory School donated 400 knitted blanket squares to CHOC and Knit-a-square, each organisation received 200 squares.

Knit-a-square volunteer, Wendy Hardy said the organisation was extremely thankful for the great donation the school had made to them. She explained the organisation asks people to knit as many squares as they can.

“We then turn them into beautiful blankets which we distribute to orphaned and vulnerable children in the country.”

Adding that a lot of the blankets are distributed in and around Gauteng, and these go to children normally around the age of three and 10 years old.

“Very often children who sleep on the ground do not have beds to sleep in and the blankets that the school gave today, are the only source of warmth these children might get during the winter,” said Hardy. She explained the organisation was incredibly grateful for the great gesture and that children, who are about the ages of the children who attend the school, will be happy for the awesome donation.

Along with the blankets, Knit-a-square hands out soft knitted toys, hand-warmers and beanies. With these donations, they hope it will help young children through the winter months.

The school’s principal, Garth Thompson said this was an annual activity for the school. “Every year we try to improve from the previous year and although it was hard, we doubled the number of blankets.” He added that the school is very proud of their donation as it will make a difference.
