Four women who have allegedly been human trafficked and kept by two men in Randburg have been found by Metro police this morning (5 August).
After the receiving a tip off, the Metro police’s K9 Unit tracked the suspects to a house in Randburg where two foreign nationals and the four female victims were found.
One of the women is from Riverlea and the other three are from the Northern Cape, Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said.
” The four women confirmed to the police that they were raped and photos of them wearing nothing but lingerie were taken by force, their semi-nude photos were then posted on a website called ‘Red Velvet’ to solicit prostitution business. The women also say that they have been held captive at the premises against their will,” he said.
Sun expressed shock at the ordeal these women had gone through,”We will not tolerate such heinous acts of crime to be done to our sisters. We will continue to bring down these criminal syndicates and do all we can to ensure that they receive the harshest jail sentence possible”.
The women have since been taken to a place of safety by the South African police and one of them was reunited with her parents. The two suspects are currently being detained at the Randburg Police Station.
The MMC said Metro police and other law enforcement agencies will clamp down on brothels and human trafficking within the City.
“The crime of forcing young girls and women into prostitution must be arrested.”
The unit which relaunched with 60 officers late last year, has since yielded drug manufacturing chemicals worth a combined R9.5 million, affecting 597 arrests, recovering 100kg of drugs, 463 stolen or hijacked vehicles, 1 044 stolen items, and 52 firearms. Early June, the unit arrested a drug dealer in Randburg during an undercover operation.
Mayor Herman Mashaba has called the unit the ‘real heroes of our City’.
