Huskey Rescue SA gets love from #FeedAPet campaign

RANDBURG – Husky Rescue benefits from the love shown by the community in the #FeedAPet campaign.

Pet lovers across South Africa got behind the Promeal #FeedAPet campaign that aimed to give back to animal charities which are in desperate need of food donations.

The campaign began last year in all grocery stores nationwide, with the goal of raising enough support to donate up to 50 000 cans of pet food to the value of about R700 000.

For every can of Boss or Petley’s pet food purchased by customers, Promeal, the manufacturer of the products, donated one can to charity. The public were also encouraged to vote for their favourite charity or nominate one by sharing pictures of their pets on social media.

Close to 100 charities were nominated and from the top 10 most-voted-for-charities, two were randomly selected as the recipients of the final donations which included Krugersdorp-based animal charity, Husky Rescue South Africa.

Husky Rescue is a non-profit organisation that specialises in the rescue and re-homing of huskies and other Nordic breeds of dogs. With the popularity of the Siberian breeds, combined with the lack of education on how to care for them, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of lost and abandoned dogs.

Founder and manager Joanne van Niekerk, along with her passionate team, is a group of volunteers who devote as much time as they can to the rescue programme. They are dedicated to safe rescue, rehabilitation, fostering and re-homing of these dogs.

“We have always had one of the most supportive and generous supporter bases; this was once again demonstrated by all the people who voted for us. Our supporters always rally around when we need them and without them, we would not be able to operate,” said Van Niekerk.

Husky Rescue has between 40 to 50 dogs at any one time, making the need for food donations vital in taking care of these furry creatures.

“The donation from Promeal will help save us a huge amount of money which can be utilised towards other expenses,” she added.

“Giving back to the pet community is a Promeal value and falls into our wider #TakeTheLead philosophy as both brands choose to focus their energies and resources on community needs and programmes,” said Promeal managing director Tania Morgan-Weyer
