Rugby’s famous Craven Week to kick off at St Stithians College
LYME PARK – Coca-Cola Craven week is synonymous with showcasing the best of South African up-and-coming rugby talent, and is the platform for both national and provincial scouts to identify South Africa's future rugby heroes.
The highly anticipated schools rugby event, the Craven Week, will kick-off at St Stithians College from 17 to 22 July.
This after three months of preparation and teamwork between the South African Rugby Union, the Golden Lions, St Stithians College and the main sponsor Coca-Cola.
The Craven Week is one of the most important events on high school rugby players’ calendars. Broadcast live on TV, the event sees the U18 provincial rugby teams battle it out. It has seen more than 260 Springbok players come through its ranks, and this year the tournament returns to Johannesburg for the first time in 11 years.
Barbara Beauchamp, St Stithians College events manager said everyone had been working really well together in preparation.
“What’s really struck me is the number of volunteers that are involved in this project, people who are giving of their time because of their passion for the sport,” she said.

Craven week is synonymous with showcasing the best of South African up-and-coming rugby talent and is the platform for both national and provincial scouts to identify South Africa’s future rugby heroes. In 2014, Coca-Cola took it one step further by introducing the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day campaign, a daily award that recognises and rewards standout players who embody the qualities of a hero. To date, 15 players, including members of this year’s Baby Boks team Curwin Bosch, Wandisile Simelane and Embrose Papier, have received this accolade.
Lethabo-Thabo Royds, St Stithians College communication coordinator said being the host venue for the Craven Week was an honour for the college.
“We are also delighted that a few of our athletes will participate in this wonderful event. We wish all of the players, coaches, referees, families, and supporters a thrilling week of rugby,” she said.
