International interest in SA movie, Beyond the River
JOBURG – Beyond the River has been described as one of the best local films in the past twenty years.
A film produced by Heartlines and Quizzical Pictures, Beyond the River, has received international interest from Australia, Brazil and the United States.
Beyond the River has been described as one of the best local films in 20 years and has been a hot topic of discussion since its release in cinemas nine weeks ago.
Based on a true-life event, the film is about two men, Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks, from very different walks of life, who had one thing in common – they both wanted to win gold in the Dusi Canoe Marathon.
What has contributed to the success of the film is its appeal to different audiences in the corporate, faith-based and educational space and also across different races – whether they love the sport or not.
Heartlines’ Dimakatso Songoane said those who did not get the chance to see the movie on the big screen now has the opportunity to see it in the comfort of their own homes.
“The film will be available on DSTV’s Box Office from 24 June, so you have no excuse to miss it. And for those who do not have access to Box Office, we also have you covered. The DVD will be available for sale and will also be available in rental stores nationwide in July,” she said. The producers want to make sure that every South African gets to see this beautiful film and becomes part of the nation-wide conversation.
Screen legend, Grant Swanby (Blood Diamond, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Invictus) stars as Steve, and Lemogang Tsipa (When We Were Black, Traffic! and Jab) makes his debut lead role as Duma.
Other cast members include Israel Sipho Matseke Zulu, who starred in Yizo Yizo, Tsotsi and Gaz’lam; Emily Child from Shirley Adams and Village Voices; Mary Twala from Beat the Drum and Lucky, Kgosi Mongake who starred in Invictus, The Bang Bang Club and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom; and Garth Breytenbach who was also seen in Black Sails and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
