Baken Akademie places 3rd at Eisteddfod

NORTHWOLD – The children worked well with each other to grow and develop as a unit.

Baken Akadamie placed 3rd at the National Eisteddfod for senior choral speech groups.

Out of the 1 361 entries to the competition, the Baken group was one of 76 performances chosen to perform at the semi-finals held at the Brooklyn theatre on 10 May.

Of all the speech and drama groups that entered the competition, there were only three chosen to perform at this semi-final stage.

One of the participants, Baruch Muller said, “It was very hard work and sometimes it became a bit boring, but all the jokes and laughing in-between made it really fun. We know who makes the mistakes and at which parts they make it, which is also funny.”

Annie Troskie, one of the teachers responsible for this great achievement explained how they got to this point. She said a group of 24 schoolchildren started practising in May last year and the poem Monster Asem by Jaco Jacobs was chosen for their performance.

“It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about how proud it makes me to be associated with such an incredible group. It was an honour to work with such fun and goal-driven young individuals,” added Troskie.

Martin Gericke, principal of Baken said, “It is endearing to witness and be part of a school like Baken Akademie. This was again evident in the growth, camaraderie and spirit among the children of the choral speech group. The children managed frustrations and achievements with laughter and support.”
