UPDATE: Karee Street pipes escalated to emergency status

RANDPARK RIDGE – Ward councillor confirms there is a plan to replace the Karee Street water pipes.

The issues with burst water pipes on Karee Street have been escalated to emergency status.

Ward 134 councillor, Wendy Alexander, explained that the escalation to emergency status means the pipe will be replaced.

Alexander further mentioned she has had an on-site meeting with the Joburg water management team, regarding this ongoing issue.

“The pipe in Karee Street has three problematic spots that keep bursting. This is due to the pipe’s age. The pipe in Karee Street needs to be replaced, and I have been working with the depot to try and find the necessary funds to undertake this project. As it is a capital budget project it has been challenging to come up with a solution within the scope of how capital budget can be spent,” she added.

The project has now been approved as an emergency after months of motivation and the number of bursts experienced. The pipe is set to be replaced from Haakdoring Street to Molope Road.

A quick summary on the way forward:

  • The project will be designed (bill of quantities, identifying services and an engineering report)
  • An emergency tender document will go out for bids
  • A contractor will be appointed
  • Approval of wayleaves
  • Development of a site office
  • Initial site meeting with all stakeholders
  • Breaking of ground to begin the project

It is estimated that the above will take approximately six weeks to complete.

“The Randburg Depot will assist with standby teams, to fast track any breakdowns that may happen while the above process is taking place,” said Alexander.
