Revitalising the inner city for private sector investment is one of Mayor Herman Mashaba’s top priorities.
MMC for Urban Development, Funzela Ngobeni, who is heavily involved in this priority project will soon host urban development meetings for the inner city in Newtown.
The City’s Transformation and Spatial Planning Unit prepared the Urban Development Framework (UDF) for the Mayfair and Fordsburg area and this is now open for public scrutiny.
Ngobeni said these suburbs are two of Johannesburg’s oldest neighbourhoods and are entrenched with rich cultural and political history.

This forms part of the City’s objective to seek a coherent and refined spatial framework to guide development in Mayfair and Fordsburg, based on a sound understanding of the role and function of the area.
“They also form part of the inner city – the most strategic development node within the City. As the metropolitan core, the inner city is a key priority in the City’s spatial development plan, and a focus of the new administration.”
A proposal was made that the inner city receives over R500 million per annum, over the next three years, in capital investment across departments and entities.
“The UDF will define and guide the development vision and objectives in these areas for the next five years,” said Ngobeni.
The exhibition for this project will be held on Thursday 20 April from 2pm to 7pm at the JDA on 3 Helen Joseph Street (former President Street) in Newtown.
The public meeting will be held at the same place on Saturday, 22 April from 1pm till 3pm.
