Victims and heroes of fire are all okay

WILGEHEUWEL – Tow reaction officers are the heroes of the fire on Curlew Close.

BCI security officer, Hennie Tolsma, who was on the scene of a fire at a complex on Curlew Close, was released from hospital on 5 April and is doing well.

This followed after Tolsma rushed into the burning building to make sure the children were rescued. BCI operations manager, Gerhard Visagie said Tolsma will be recuperating at his residence for the next three days to ensure a full recovery before joining the BCI team again.

An unsung hero from the incident on 4 April, was reaction officer Leonard Sithole from Dunmar Security.

According to Stella Aggenbach, technical manager of Dunmar Security, Sithole was busy with his patrols when he saw smoke coming from the complex on Curlew Close.

He entered the complex to investigate and when he looked up to the first floor he saw two children at the window crying while smoke was billowing out.

Smoke rises from a block of flats on Curlew Close on 4 April.

“He ran in and took the two children outside to safety. They were crying and he consoled them by saying that their mother was on her way. They were not visibly injured,” Aggenbach said.

“He also went back and retrieved a TV, washing machine and some clothing. The mother of the children made contact with Leonard the moment she arrived on the scene. More reaction officers of EC Security and BCI arrived. Leonard also helped clear the way for the fire truck which arrived shortly after. The victims are not clients of Dunmar,” Aggenbach added.

A fire truck is parked outside the flat.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services, said the cause of the fire is still unknown.
