How to navigate your way around a salary increase

  Negotiations around salary increments can look a lot like a game, according to country manager South Africa, Jesse Green from Adzuna, a search engine for jobs. The job search engine has recently created a nifty guide to assist employees, ensuring they get a high score while negotiating their salary increment.

“Adzuna’s recent look at which jobs have seen the biggest salary increases in South Africa over the past five years shows that over time, there can be dramatic shifts in the value of certain skills. So are you due for a pay rise?” asked Green.

He said it was worth checking whether your skills are worth more than what you’re currently being paid. Thereafter, look to see if similar positions are being posted, the same as the one you’re in.

“Sometimes even asking people in your industry – especially those more senior – what you should be earning, is the most valuable advice,” he said.

Yet, the boss is not simply going to increase your salary when the market for skills changes. More often than not you have to give him or her a nudge. Walking into their office right away with a spreadsheet might not work, so how do you go about it?
