Artist needs more local backing

BLAIRGOWRIE – Touch of Genius Art Gallery in Blairgowrie features local artists such as Althea Nzima.

BLAIRGOWRIE – Self-taught artist, Althea Nzima is an up-and-coming artist.

Her work was recently exhibited at Touch of Genius Art Gallery in Blairgowrie and all her pieces were quickly sold.

“I am inspired by everyday life and all the things that I’ve experienced. I may meet someone whose story touches me and may incorporate that into my work to make it more interesting,” Nzima said.

She describes herself as a people’s person who likes to hear the different stories that people have to tell.

Nzima began looking into becoming a professional artist while still in high school and was inspired by Mexican artist, Freda Kahlo, and Mary Sibande, who represents women in art for Nzima.

“I was really inspired by what I saw from Freda Kahlo and Mary Sibande and they inspired me to want to become a top artist and that is my biggest dream,” she added.

She further explained that she does not limit her art and can do anything that catches her fancy but has mostly painted portraits.

“I can use anything to create my art but I mostly pay attention to the eyes because that is usually the first thing that will draw a person in and really that is what brings my art to life,” she explained.

Nzima hopes to mentor other artists to perfect their art through her upcoming Touch of Genius mentorship programme where she herself was mentored a year ago.

Looking towards her future, she sees herself completing an art qualification as she wants to have a deeper understanding of her artwork.

She encouraged residents to pay a visit to Touch of Genius Art Gallery and support local artists.
