Suspect arrested after shootout

KYA SAND – One of the suspects fired shots at the police before he fled the scene.

A suspect (25) was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on 30 January on the corner of Riverbend Road and Epsom Avenue.

Douglasdale police arrested the man at Hoogland while following up on information about the whereabouts of the suspects who were involved in a business robbery which occurred last year at Cosmo Mall in Cosmo City.

Police spotted the vehicle, a blue Toyota Hilux, and ordered the two suspects who were inside to stop. “One suspect got out of the vehicle and as the police approached him he fired shots at them before he fled the scene,” said Douglasdale police spokesperson Captain Mpho Kgasoane.

Police managed to arrest the other suspect who was still inside the vehicle. He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with a magazine and 15 live rounds. No one was injured during the shootout.

Police went to the suspect’s house in Kya Sands informal settlement and recovered another unlicensed firearm, a magazine with 15 live rounds and seven cellphones.

The arrested suspect was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. “Police investigations are continuing. We thank the community members for a good working relationship and appeal to anyone with information that might assist the investigations to contact us.”
