Reasons not to make New Year’s resolutions

JOHANNESBURG – Are New Year's resolutions realistic or are you just setting yourself up for disappointment?

It has become a tradition that at the end of each year to make New Year’s resolutions to do things better or to become a better person the following year.

Well, this is a trap, and here is why.

We make these ridiculous announcements to our loved ones and our friends only to have our faces stuck in the pie at the end of the following year. Some New Year’s resolutions are just too unrealistic, not because they’re impossible to achieve, but because they are not in tune with who we are and where we are at, at that particular time.

Have you ever told people that you would stop smoking the following year only to wake up the following day with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other?

Or have you ever told people that you’ll start rocking the gym and lose weight the next year only to find yourself in the middle of the year one size bigger and nowhere near the entrance of a gym?

Or even better, have you told people that you were going to buy that car, house, start a qualification or save more money and the following year ends without any of those achievements ticked off the bucket list?

Making New Year’s resolutions puts a lot of pressure on ourselves to achieve goals that are placed somewhere at the back of our minds. And when that year comes and goes without achieving them we feel close to failures and highly demoralised.

Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, set goals for yourself in your own time and keep them to yourself. Only you know what you want to achieve and when you want to achieve it.

Besides, life happens and sometimes things don’t always go as we planned.
