Homeless at the post office

RANDPARK RIDGE – Residents are feeling unsafe when using the post office and here is why...

Homeless people are finding refuge at the Randpark Ridge Post Office.
For many years, homeless people have been sleeping under the shelter of the post office walls.
Mattresses, dirty blankets and pieces of foam were recently found strewn around the post office.
Ward 126 councillor David Brand asked, “What is national government doing about the homeless?”

Tins of food and coffee were also found placed on the post office's boxes.

Brand added that the City does not have adequate facilities to accommodate the homeless and this results in them seeking shelter elsewhere.
“It seems that residents may feel unsafe when collecting their mail here and this needs to be addressed.”
Metro police’s spokesperson, Superintendent Edna Mamonyane commented, “To be homeless is not a crime, however, we have bylaws and they need to be followed.”
Mamonyane said that Metro police try to enforce the bylaws and that the homeless should not leave the place where they sleep unclean.
Brand added that there needs to be a balance, “One has to adhere to the City’s bylaws and do right by the homeless. Metro police work in conjunction with social development to help relocate and aid the homeless people in our City.”
