Traditional ‘Coffee Run’ with Boskruin Running Group

BOSKRUIN – The Boskruin Running Group host free fun runs in the mornings.

What better way to get fit, than to run free and safe runs with friendly people in your neighbourhood.

The Boskruin Running Group (BRG) hosts runs on Tuesdays and Fridays from 5am to 6am. This group features a mixture of residents with a keen interest in running, despite their pace. “Either you prefer trail or road, short or long distance – experienced or new, you will find someone who will run and have fun with you,” said group member, Elrien Bootha.

Group members meet outside the BP garage at Boskruin Village on the corner of President Fouché Drive and Hawken Avenue. There are various routes ranging from 8km to 10km, and is decided on the morning of the run.

The group also offers a 15km run on Wednesday mornings to those who are interested in adding a longer run during the week, starting from 4.30am.

“Every now and then you will notice a few very energetic runners adding an extra loop. The aim is always to finish by 6am so that you can get ready for the day – whether it is the school or work rush,” she said.

He added that Friday morning sees a traditional Coffee Run, where members run a 6 to 10km route and subsequently socialise for a few minutes over a coffee at a local café.

“The atmosphere is contagious and, occasionally, the group will organise a charity, or fun run, where the group dress up according to a theme,” she said.

In February, the group organised a charity run for the Organisation for Paediatric Support in South Africa (OPSSA). Afterwards, medals were collected and distributed to hospitalised children.

“The group collected a total of 16 263km in medals. A medal was given to a child after a procedure to acknowledge that they also successfully conquered a difficult situation and to tell the children that they are brave,” she said.

According to Bootha, they received an overwhelming response from the group members towards the charity.

“The BRG is not an official running club and there are no fees charged for members. Participation is voluntary and the only kit requirement is to bring light and reflective clothing so that you are visible in the early mornings,” she concluded.
