UPDATE: Wits suspends all activities for the week

BRAMFONTEIN – After student protest broke out on Wits main campus this week, the university has announced that all activities will be suspended for the remainder of the week.

When the Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande announced to the nation that universities should determine their own their fees increase not exceeding 8 per cent, Wits students went on the rampage shutting down the university.

In a statement released on its website Wits University has announced late yesterday that after considering the safety of its staff and students, the Senior Executive Team of the university, in consultation with the Chairperson of its Council, have taken the decision to suspend all University activities for the rest of the week.

“Academics, professional, administrative and support staff and students need not come onto Wits’ campuses on 21 September.  However, residences and dining halls should operate as usual and staff in these areas should report for duty,” the statement said.

The statement further added that the university condemns the actions of those who perpetrated acts of violence on its campus. “We are identifying them (the perpetrators) and will take action in line with the university’s rules and the law,” the statement read.

The Executive Committee of Council will meet on today, 21 September, nine days earlier than they had announced previously, and the university will communicate further thereafter.
