Tweets influence jazz music

NORTHRIDING/NORTHWOLD – Jazz fans tweet to create a unique sound track with a live band.

Local residents played a part in creating the music heard at the Twitter Jam held to create awareness of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival.

Those who attended the Twitter Jam were required to tweet using the hashtag #SBJOJ along with the instrument they wanted to hear, for example #drums. A live band, which includes Standard Bank’s Young Artist for 2011, Bokani Dyer and the Soul Housing Project, played the requested instruments in the tweets to make a unique track.

The fun, held at the Fourways Farmers Market on 11 September, gave the audience a taste of what they could expect at the jazz festival to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 15 to 17 September. Jazz fans will be able to see the likes of Judith Sephuma, Lira, Sibongile Khumalo and Sipho Hotstix Mabuse at the festival.

“As a strong supporter of the arts, and jazz in particular, it is important for Standard Bank to bring jazz to unexpected places to expose this genre of music because we know that the closer you are, the more you feel. By combining the power of social media with that of jazz, the band took their cues from the crowd who ultimately moved the music forward with their tweets and participated in creating an electric vibe,” said Hazel Chimhandamba, head of Group Sponsorships at Standard Bank.
