Comedic Copps take over the radio

JOBURG – Funny men band together to create something new for radio.

On 6 September, four of the country’s favourite comedians officially launched a new radio series called Copps on 94.7 radio station during Anele Mdoda’s weekday spot.

Chris Forrest, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane, Mojak Lehoko, and Warren Robertson are the scriptwriters of the series, as well as the voices of the hilarious crime fighters who will be reigning in the city’s criminals as they struggle to save Metropolisburg – ‘a place where crime is worse than Steve Hofmeyr’s last CD’.

The superheroes have been chosen by the almighty herbalist, named Mr Professor Doctor, and they represent some South African stereotypes while delivering witty one-liners and showing their knack for twisting reality into humour.

On the first of the weekly episodes, the whacky superheroes dropped our jaws with their hilarious punchlines. ‘I can’t pay back the money’ and ‘I will be rich and be able to buy pre-grated cheese’ are just two of the lines that tickled Mdoda’s funny bone during the launch of the exciting new series that is taking radio back to the old school days of radio series.

Forrest is a comedy industry leader and has been a part of a number of television shows and comedy showcases for more than 15 years.

Lehoko has been at the forefront of underground comedy for many years and frequents stand-up comedy clubs, but also commits to scriptwriting for television and now radio.

Dikwane is an arts boffin and the winner of the Savannah Comic’s Choice Newcomer’s Award, presented to him at the awards ceremony over the weekend.

Robertson first stepped onto the comedy scene in 2006 and has since won numerous awards, both locally and internationally, for his ability to make people laugh.

With such an impressive line-up of comedic talent, we’re definitely not missing out on the three-minute long weekly episodes of the show, airing every Tuesday at 5.55pm.
