Joburg’ first military tattoo starts tomorrow

JOBURG - Joburg's first-ever military tattoo is heading to the Apartheid Museum.

Joburg’s first show of military equipment, tattoos and bands will head to the Apartheid Museum for three days.

From 7 until 10 September, families can see mass military bands, precision drilling and traditional and gumboot dancing in what the recently elected Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, called a welcome addition to the variety and quality of events held in the city every year.

Military tattoos, according to the City, serve an important purpose in creating stronger links between a country’s armed forces and its citizens and create greater social cohesion. “It is a unique opportunity to showcase Joburg’s ability to organise and host events of this magnitude and to market our city as a destination for tourism among discerning global audiences,” said Mashaba.

“The Apartheid Museum at Gold Reef City is a fitting venue for the City’s first hosting of the military tattoo. We trust that this will also shine the spotlight on the quality and diversity of tourism and leisure destinations within our City and encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the best that Joburg can offer.”

Various military units, schools and communities will participate in the event.

“The event is also catered for young children and people with disabilities,” Mashaba assured.
