Lanseria to fly to new heights

LANSERIA – Lanseria International Airport is very busy with upgrades in order to take Joburg to new places.

Passengers travelling to and from Lanseria International Airport can now look forward to exciting new changes coming soon.

Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Lanseria, Gavin Sayce explained that a growing demand from the city inspired them to do major upgrades to the airport.

As is, the international terminal accommodates 70 people, but the airport recently expanded this part of Lanseria to accommodate approximately 186 people.

Sayce explained that they are dealing with various airlines to use Lanseria’s services so that international flights from airlines and not only private and charter planes could be accommodated.

The building is brand new, boasting a baggage carriage. The current tower, used to control air traffic will be demolished and a new one of 28m is being built on the south side of the airport.

Sayce explained that currently the tower is positioned in such a way that the controllers can’t see everywhere. “The new tower will improve visibility,” said Sayce.

A brand new emergency services unit will also join the tower on the south side. The new services unit will be big enough to handle more vehicles due to the growing demand. Apart from the visibility issue, the current tower is also in the way of the new Charlie apron, which is the parking for private and charter airplanes.

According to Sayce the total cost for the upgrades is approximately R60 million.

The new tower and emergency units will be opened in January 2017. Sayce added that they are also in the process of discussing a new three-storey parking bay, hotel and service station. Building the parking bay will start in March 2017.

Sayce concluded that the City has plans in place to promote Johannesburg as the hub of Gauteng with Lanseria International Airport being a very important part.
