Stock broker by day, rapper by night

FERNDALE - Gujwa Magagula has set his sights on the bigger and better.

Renowned author, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, once said, “If your dreams aren’t scary, theyre not big enough” and that is what drives hip-hop artist, Gujwa Magagula (aka, Rex Steele).

“I want to put South African hip-hop on the global map, leaving behind a musical legacy,” said 24-year-old Magagula. He explained that he has been a rapper since 2011 when he and a friend started-up a rap duo called, Black Cartel, which disbanded after only releasing one project. Magagula completed his honours degree in investment and corporate finance at Wits and is now working as a stockbroker.

“I had to place my career on hold to complete my schooling because I want to be financially savvy and make sure that I have many options open to me,” he added. He also explained that his stage name, Rex Steele, was derived from his grandfather, whose name was Rex and he adopted the “Steele” name, after several accidents where he broke his jaw and had to have steel plates inserted.

The Ferndale resident describes his music as alternative hip-hop that can resonate with anyone. “My new song, recently launched, is called, 011 and it’s a song anyone who has lived in Joburg can relate to, as I sing about the way this city really is,” he said.

Magagula pointed out that the new 90/10 percent implementation of local music allocated on SABC radio was a good thing because this could bring back the traditional role radio played, breaking new artists into the industry. “Artists all over South Africa need a platform to showcase their talent because there is talent – in abundance – and there’s new music being made every day,” he noted.

With the support of his parents and siblings, Magagula is sure to break boundaries. “My music is not widely available but my song is available on Data File Host.com, on my Facebook page, Rex Steele as well as on my Sound Cloud Page,“he said. He added that if anyone wanted to book him for an event, they should send an e-mail to his mananger.
