Grizzlies grow from strength to strength

NORTHGATE – Grizzlies players earn themselves their Gauteng Ice Hockey half colours for the sport.

Grizzlies Ice Hockey Club’s aim to grow from strength to strength is ultimately paying off. This club has gone from one milestone to another and confirmed its position in the Gauteng Ice Hockey League.

“We have confirmed our position in the league and have played a series of league games in our different age categories with quite a few still to come,” said the club owner, Leon Jansen van Rensburg.

He indicated that this was a developmental season for the club, which is based at the Northgate Ice Rink. “Our U14s have started to show their drive and commitment in the games they played and won. During the first quarter of this 2016 season our team participated in the annual provincial trials which led to more success for the Grizzlies,” he continued.

Two of the club’s players were selected to participate in the Inter-Provincial Tournament for Gauteng, competing against the country’s best players.

With Western Province, Eastern Province and even KwaZulu-Natal competing, the level of ice hockey displayed ensured that the sport is in good hands for the future.

“Competing in this tournament saw some of our players earning themselves their Gauteng Ice Hockey half colours for the sport,” he explained.

The team hit the trifecta when Van Rensburg, who is also coach of the U14s, was assigned to coach one of the Gauteng teams: Leopards U12.

Even at that level of play, the Grizzlies showed their commitment to playing as a team. “Our players, Joshua Muller, the goalkeeper for the Grizzlies U14 and Leopards U12, and Jerry Ong, forward and defender for Grizzlies U14 and Leopards U14, competed and achieved accolades,” he said.

Muller was the most valuable player (MVP) in a match between the Leopards and Western Province and won the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Ong was the best team player of the tournament in the U14 teams, while Van Rensburg coached the Leopards U12 team to a silver medal and second place overall in the age category.
