SANBS blood levels run low

JOBURG – SANBS is hopeful this week's Mandela Day Blood Drive will boost their blood stock.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is experiencing very low stocks with only 2.1 days worth of blood supply.

According to public relations practitioner, Sini Subrayen, the shortage is likely due to this winter period as many donors have the flu and are on antibiotics and subsequently cannot donate.

However, Subrayen is positive that over this coming weekend to Mandela Day, 15 to 18 July, there will be many blood drives and the supply will return to a safe level.

“The Mandela Day Blood Drive at Stanlib, Melrose Arch, from 9am to 4pm on 15 July and separate blood drives will take place at The Zone in Rosebank and Norwood Mall over the weekend. Our target for the drive is 300 units,” Subrayen explained.

Details: SANBS, 080 011 9031.
