ANC’s campaign expenditure must be investigated

JOBURG– Is the ANC using City of Joburg funds for their election campaign?

The Democratic Alliance (DA) sent a letter to the public protector Thuli Madonsela on 6 July, in connection with the African National Congress’s (ANC) campaign expenditure.

The DA argues that the ANC is using funds provided by the City of Joburg to fund their campaigning methods. According to Herman Mashaba, DA mayoral candidate for Joburg, the City of Johannesburg, under mayor Parks Tau, has spent over R1 million in advertising, since the beginning of July.

Meanwhile Congress of the People national spokesperson Dennis Bloem said that at present they are struggling to raise funds to execute their campaigning strategies and it is difficult to estimate how much they are spending on their campaigns.

“The Congress of the People are not concerned with the campaigning methods of the ANC or any other party. Our main focus is our own campaigning methods for the upcoming municipal elections,” said Bloem.

The DA will send a letter to the public protector requesting that the ANC’s campaigning expenditure be investigated. Herman Mashaba’s spokesperson Nkele Molapo said they are concerned because the ANC needs to separate their expenditure from the City of Johannesburg funds and must raise them independently.

“We will be able to determine a plan of action once a ruling has been made. We will wait till the public protector has reached a decision, then we will act accordingly, based on her ruling,” said Molapo.
