Isidingo’s rising star
NORTHGATE – Michaella Russell spends time with the Randburg Sun and tell us about her career.
Michaella Russell is not only a beautiful face that graces our TV screens every night but she is a multi-talented force to be reckoned with.
Russell took over the role of Charlie Holmes on the popular soapie Isidingo from Jay Anstey and has worked her way into the hearts of millions of viewers.
It was while she was studying psychology at Monash University that she landed the role of Charlie Holmes after being invited to audition for the part. “I thought I could have done better during my auditions and as I said this to my agent she broke the news that I had the part,” Russell explained.
She further explained that at first her parents were not overjoyed that she would be acting but gradually, over time, they became more supportive. She points out that she is not one for the spotlight but derives happiness from practising her art, which she finds rewarding. “The cast of Isidingo are so professional and in the beginning, they helped me to step up my acting abilities but I was intent on doing the role justice as well as raise it to the next level,” Russell noted.
The 23-year-old Russell said what most fans out there won’t know about her is that she teaches yoga and takes part in kickboxing. “I believe in doing a good job in everything I do and I don’t leave anything to chance,” she said.
When she is not on set, Russell can be found reading a good book or hanging out with friends at the dam. “I love wake boarding which we are able to do when my friends and I go to the dam,” she added. Despite her busy schedule, she continues to study through the University of South Africa (UNISA) where she is currently studying towards her degree in psychology.
“Before deciding on studying psychology I wanted to study to become a general surgeon or a skin specialist but I also knew that I could do better things. After doing some modelling, I approached my agency and literally begged them to take me on and a few years down the line my hard work is slowly paying off,” Russell added. She encouraged other potential actors out there to create their own opportunities and not wait for chance.
