More water wasted as pipe leaks for four months

BLAIRGOWRIE – A leaking pipe has frustrated a resident after she waits four months for Joburg Water to fix it.

Catherine Rudman reported a leaking pipe more than four months ago and still Johannesburg Water (JW) has yet to fix the problem.

Rudman claims that she has reported the problem numerous times to JW and after four months of phone calls she is utterly frustrated. “The leaking pipe is affecting my driveway and moss is growing in between the bricks,” Rudman said. She added that the water from the leaking pipe was getting into her garage and that was affecting the temperature in her son’s room. “I have had to move my son out of his room as he recently suffered from bronchial pneumonia – it’s just so cold and damp in there,” she explained. She pointed out that she has collected four reference numbers and that after some struggle JW sent someone to have a look at the leak. “The worker from JW did come out on one occasion, located where the leak was and promised to come back the next day. Up until now, I am still waiting for their return,” she added. Previously JW had fixed the same pipe four times in the last year and according to Rudman, the pipe was just clamped where the hole was found. “Last year JW was diligent in repairing the pipe but for the past four months, it has been a struggle to get it repaired. I think that the pipe needs to be replaced once and for all,” she added.

Spokesperson for JW, Eleanor Mavimbela said that JW did a leak detection and sampling for the leak to establish where the leak was coming from. “The results show that it’s not reticulated water – but ground water and therefore the leak will be addressed in conjunction with JRA,” she explained. She further noted that JW will communicate with the customer on the latest developments as well as update them on the way forward.
