Kicks for a cause

BORDEAUX – Players of all ages and skill levels come in large numbers to support Ann Harding Cheshire Home.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home hosted their largest fundraising soccer tournament since its inception.

The Ann Harding Cheshire Home Indoor Soccer Tournament Fundraiser has come to be known as a great day of fundraising for Ann Harding Cheshire Home resident, Tom Sundawo. The record turnout saw 16 teams arrive for a jam-packed day of five-a-side soccer at the Old Parktonian’s Africa United pitches in Bordeaux on 2 May.

Each team consisting of eight players had their turn competing in 20-minute five-a-side soccer games. Sundawo said, “I am so grateful for everyone who participated today as well as the sponsors. I cannot generate my own income, so this helps me greatly to afford my stay at Ann Harding and continue my recovery.”

The somewhat temperamental weather saw the teams challenge each other to be crowned the winner. Special mention went to the Randburg Football Club women and girls, who, with three teams showed determination and insatiable spirit. The girls teams were a definite favourite in terms of support at the tournament. Top goal scorer, Asante Papo won a limited-edition mug for her sheer grit when competing against much older and more experienced teams.

The final match was played between United 10 and Schetla, who have become veterans of the tournament. Schetla narrowly grabbed the coveted first place title with a final score of 6–2. VL Footy came in third place.
