BREAKING NEWS: Golden Lions to play Currie Cup match at Diggers

MALANSHOF –Great news for local Randburg Currie Cup supporters.

Diggers Rugby Club are excited about hosting the Golden Lions Rugby Union at their home ground for a Currie Cup match.

Diggers will host the Golden Lions versus Cheetahs on 7 May.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) announced that they will be taking their Currie Cup games back to grassroots level. This will be done by playing their home games at local rugby clubs in the Joburg area, and most importantly the much loved Diggers rugby club in Malanshof.

Other clubs will be: Alberton against Blue Bulls, Pirates against Eastern Province, Johannesburg Police against Griquas and Roodepoort against SWD Eagles.

Golden Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli said, “We’re taking the game back to our grassroots and our stakeholders.” A tender process was followed and the GLRU carried out a duo diligence audit after which these five clubs were granted the rights to host the five Currie Cup matches.

Diggers Rugby Club vice chairman Marc Baker said, “We put in the tender about three weeks ago and as a club we were so pleased and shocked at the good news. We are extremely proud to play host to the Golden Lions.”

“I know it is going to be an enormous success and will assist them with their future projects,” said Kevin de Klerk, president of the GLRU.

Baker added, “It will bring camaraderie and showmanship that is usually reserved for Ellis Park to the local clubs.”

When asked about the mammoth challenge of hosting a stadium full of supporters Baker commented, “We are expecting a large crowd and will entertain them with a fun-filled day of non-stop rugby, from the U13s all the way to the senior sides.”

Entrance to the games has been set at a standard rate of R20 per vehicle while walk-ins would pay R10 per person. Season ticket holders will gain entrance to all these matches at no extra cost.
