GALLERY and VIDEO: Tour at newly revamped Randburg Fire Station

BLAIRGOWRIE – Members of the public are welcome to learn the basics of emergency and firefighting.

The newly revamped Randburg Fire Station in Blairgowrie is well equipped with various facilities that many other fire stations do not have.

Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi took the Randburg Sun on a station tour on 21 January.

An entertainment area, dining room, newly revamped kitchen as well as a gym room are some of the features that keep firefighters busy while waiting for an emergency call.

The offices of the reporting commander and the fire chief as well as the CCTV room have been revamped. All the doors at the garages are electronic with TVs in most of the offices connected to DSTV.

Mulaudzi said the station was revamped by MultiChoice and provided a friendly working environment for firefighters.

“Rooms on the first floor are basically for administration purposes while on the ground floor there are clean rooms equipped with entertainment and basic necessities any fire station should have,” he explained.

The station was officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Mpho Parks Tau on 31 October 2014.

Head of the Be Safe centre at the station Chris Viviers explained that community members and non-governmental organisations were welcome to receive basic fire training at the station.

“We provide basic training to children and adults. We normally teach children from nursery schools about pedestrian safety, water safety, car and parking safety,” he explained.

He added that they have enough resources and facilities to provide an eight-hour-long training session. “Our training also includes first aid, how to use a fire extinguisher, basic CPR and the whole evacuation process,” he continued.

According to Viviers, their classes are interactive and fun. “We are prepared to train the whole of Randburg to be as resilient as possible. We try to have a working relationship with whoever wants to learn out there,” he concluded.

Any non-governmental organisations, residents and nursery schools willing to learn more about fire safety can call the station or whats App Viviers on 084 252 3469 to make arrangements.
