Meet the Honeydew Cluster Commander

HONEYDEW – Newly appointed Honeydew Cluster Commander Major-General Girly Mbele is set to tackle crime and lead her cluster in the right direction.

As the new year gets underway Honeydew Cluster announced the new and permanent appointment of the Cluster Commander Major-General Girly Mbele.

Maj-Gen Mbele takes over from Major-General Oswald Reddy who was transferred to the George Police Cluster last year and she has over 29 years experience within the South African Police Services.

Maj-Gen Mbele will oversee the Roodepoort, Douglasdale, Florida, Diepsloot, Honeydew and Randburg police stations.

“I joined the police service because I have a passion for service delivery and when I was younger, I realised that there were very few women within the police service. It motivated me to join and offer my services,” she explained.

She pointed out that since she joined the police service in 1987 she has seen the positive changes that have been happening within the police service and that she wants residents who fall under her cluster to know that she is here to make a difference as well as to lead the cluster into the right direction.

“We will continue doing our best as the police despite the fact that police members are being killed; we are encouraged to continue our fight against crime,” she warned.

Maj-Gen Mbele admitted that effective planning helped her to strike a balance between her job and her private life and said that she found that she preferred spending time with her family when she is off duty.

“I have two children and a grandson and spending quality time with them is what makes me happy,” she said. She added that she found that she did not have time for friends as her family was her first priority.

Maj-Gen Mbele said that her mandate as the cluster commander was to ensure that crime in her cluster is reduced and that residents under her cluster can live peacefully.

“My door is always open to residents but within this cluster residents should be aware that there are many different types of living areas as well as businesses and they do pose a challenge that we are tackling head on,” she explained.

She calls on residents to work with police to combat crime in their areas as they know what is happening in their communities.
