GALLERY: Brightening up the aisles

BORDEOUX – Methodist Home, Garden Village hosts a stellar beauty pageant for the aged.

It was a lovely day at Methodist Home Garden Village on 26 November when it held its third beauty pageant for the elderly.

The event was a major hit with the residents at the home as they showed their support to the contestants who participated in the pageant.

Jeannette Chepape, pageant coordinator and who has been working at the home for about 16 years, said she wanted the elderly to have a nostalgic event.

“I love working with the grannies and grandpas, we are all like one very big family,” said Chepape.

She said that this home is unlike any other she has visited.

“Things here are almost too close to perfect,” said Chepape. “Residents here love it and it’s very homely, families leave their loved ones in very capable hands with this stuff.”

The pageant’s theme was comfort/self-expression, which saw the contest throw caution to the relaxed wind as they strutted down the aisle in their best. Brightly coloured garments along with themed outfits conjured released of not only loud cheers, but a sea of smiles from the pageant attendees.

Nthathu Guma, another nurse at the home, said the event was explosive.

“They were all beautiful,” said Guma. “We wanted them to know that they are still beautiful and the event was so well planned.”

The winner of the pageant, Jane Kolia said she had been a model since her teenage years.

“I’m so happy I won, I have crowned so many pageants in my life that now I get the crown,” said Kolia.

There were two second princesses, Nick Hofman and Ann Templeton. There were also two runners-up, Diana de Reuck and Joan Baile.
