GALLERY: Women’s workshop about cancer

OLIVEDALE – Women who are on active cancer treatment are taught how to look after their hair, skin and nails.

The Look Good Feel Better Foundation held a workshop at the Olivedale Clinic on 26 November.

The purpose of the workshop was to advise patients who are on active cancer treatments, on how to look after themselves.

Cancer sufferers were taught about how they can look after their hair, nails and skins.

“We are helping them restore their confidence, renew and take control of their health,” said LGFB programme director Margaret Hewson.

The Look Good Feel Better programme provides a neutral product with no cosmetic products, range or manufacturer being promoted.

Each workshop participant receives a gift of skin-care and make-up products to suit her complexion.

The workshop was attended by more 10 women.

Hewson said loosing her skin pigmentation, fragile nails and very dry skin are some of the things faced by cancer sufferers, however, there is a way to deal with all these.

At the workshop, women where supplied with cosmetics including make-up and taught how to apply all these to help cover skin problems during the treatment process.

They were also taught how to cover their hair with scarfs.

LGFB believes that by looking good, it will help the women to continue facing the world like it use to be before cancer.

Hewson said they also visited Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where over 50 cancer patients participated.

“We do this every month, it is not a once-off thing,” she explained.

The foundation helps women in active cancer treatment to address the appearance-related side effects of their treatment in a practical and positive way through interactive free workshops held at major hospitals and clinics.

Guided through a 12-step skincare and make-up regime, women are taught simple and effective techniques to deal with the changes in her appearance due to cancer treatment.

Hewson said women leave feeling uplifted and empowered, by the support and friendship that they experience with fellow patients.
