LYME PARK – Pupils protest at their school's main entrance in support of 16 Days of Activism.

St Stithians College pupils protested outside their school’s main entrance gate to show their support of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The Grade 11 girls and boys stood in silence at the entrance on 5 November.

After a message in the school’s chapel by Reverend Jenni Samdaan, the girls college pupils approached their school’s leadership along with the boys college with a request to stage this protest. The pupils chose to stage the protest early as they would be writing exams during the national campaign. They felt strongly about taking a stand and showing their support for the campaign and its message.

The protest was organised and run by the learners themselves. These Grade 11 learners are the current leaders of the school as the Matrics have left.

Ivanka Acquisto, head at St Stithians, said she was proud that the pupils took a stand and that it was a synergistic event.

“The students took it seriously, I was just a proud head,” said Acquisto.

She also added that the protest showed that abuse against women and children is not reserved for one gender to feel enraged about.

“It is for both men and women to stand together against it,” said Acquisto.
