HONEYDEW – The Barnswallows Swift Academy raises money to buy a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for special needs children.

The Barnswallows Swift Academy hosted their annual Charity Golf Day at Eagle Canyon Golf Club on 29 October.

The Swift Academy rehabilitates abused and abandoned children and helps find them safe, permanent homes.

The academy hosted their annual golf day to raise money for a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for their special-needs children.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised room or tube. It is a well-established treatment for autism, cerebral palsy, decompression sickness, serious infections, bubbles of air in blood vessels, and wounds that take a long time to heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.

Rene Testa, the director of Barnswallows, said, “This will be easier for the children since they have to go to other places for the hyperbaric oxygen therapy.”

She also added, “Our particular strength is our work with children with special needs, like premature babies, children born with fetal alcohol syndrome, cerebral palsy, HIV or any developmental delay “.

Barnswallows aimed to raise R100 000 to get a second-hand hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

Their annual charity golf day sold four balls to guests that were interested in helping out while enjoying a game of golf at the same.

Guests came out and dressed up to play 18 holes and had a great time in the sun.
