ANC protesters have called off the march after it was explained that they had applied for a peaceful gathering and not a march on 30 October.

ANC members gathered early in the morning and were singing along Jan Smuts Avenue, next to Randburg Taxi Rank.

Randburg Police and JMPD officers monitored the protesters.

Few protesters were initially stopped by the police, while they tried to march around the CBD.

Police instructed them to gather at an open space on the corner Jan Smuts Avenue and Bram Fischer Drive.

South African National Civic Organisation (Sasco) Ward 102 secretary Diens Maila said they were expecting more people to come.

“The memorandum will be handed over at 11.30am and the protest will continue until 1pm,” Maila said, but the gathering was later cancelled..

Most shops in the CBD are not opened and informal traders are scarce.

More details to follow.
